About the producer

Their story

A spirits manufactory in Berlingen in the Vulkaneifel, founded in 2014 by Sandra Wimmeler and Denis Lönnendonker, whose first product was a gin distilled from potatoes. On its own base alcohol from Eifel potatoes Windspiel makes London dry gins, a sloe gin, a barrel-aged potato vodka and the Kraut & Knolle herbal spirit, and laid down a single malt whisky in its founding year.

Potatoes grown by contract farmers in the mineral-rich volcanic soil of the Eifel, each spirit from a single vintage, among them the starch-rich variety Pirol, distilled into the manufactory's own base alcohol; mostly regional ingredients such as hand-picked Eifel sloes, beside botanicals such as juniper, lavender, coriander, ginger root, cinnamon bark and lemon peel.
Windspiel has worked from the start with its own base alcohol distilled from Eifel potatoes, and makes everything by hand in small batches without industrial plant, together with master distillers it names among Germany's best, one of them a doctor of sensory science. The name goes back to Frederick the Great, who brought the potato to Prussia with his potato decree of 1746 and loved Windspiel greyhounds. Its bottles close with natural cork, labels and cartons are recyclable paper, and shipping is CO2-neutral.

FAQ

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the history and founding story?

Sandra Wimmeler and Denis Lönnendonker, rooted in the Vulkaneifel and taken with British style and humour, both gin fans, founded the Windspiel Manufaktur in 2014. Their first product was a high-end gin distilled from potatoes; the Barrel Aged Potato Vodka and the herbal spirit Kraut & Knolle followed. The name recalls Frederick the Great, whose potato decree of 1746 brought the potato to his country, and his second passion, Windspiel greyhounds.

How are raw materials sourced?

The base alcohol is distilled from potatoes grown by contract farmers in the Eifel, for each spirit from a single vintage; the vodka uses the starch-rich variety Pirol from the mineral-rich volcanic soil. The other ingredients are mostly regional, such as hand-picked Eifel sloes for the sloe gin, combined with botanicals from further afield.

What unique production methods are used?

Windspiel makes its products only in small batches and by hand, without industrial production plant, and works with master distillers it counts among Germany's best. The potato vodka is distilled five times in a specially developed process and then rests several months in ash casks.

What sustainability practices are implemented?

The master distillers rely on solar energy and photovoltaics, the ingredients are mostly regional with short transport routes, the bottles are closed with sustainably made natural corks, labels and cartons are of recyclable paper, and parcels ship CO2-neutral.

What awards and certifications have been received?

Windspiel names four golds — at the World Spirits Award as national gin of the year and at Meininger's International Spirits Award ISW among them — and design and brand awards including the German Design Award, the German Brand Award, the Red Dot Design Award and the iF Design Award.

What collaborations or partnerships exist?

With Auerbach Berlin, Windspiel offers its own collection designed by Jan-Henrik Scheper-Stuke, and its Barrel Aged Potato Vodka is served in Lufthansa First Class.
