About the producer

Their story

A Berlin spirits house founded in 2009 by Vincent Honrodt, who revived the spirits his great-grandfather Ernst Honrodt distilled from regional grain and sugar beet in the 1930s. Berliner Brandstifter makes gins with flowers from around Berlin, a vodka from sugar beet, a wheat Kornbrand and cask-aged editions of gin and Korn, bottled, sealed and numbered by hand in small editions.

German wheat of the highest quality class for the Kornbrand, which is also the base spirit of the gins; French sugar beet for the vodka; and flowers and botanicals partly grown and hand-picked around Berlin — elderflower, mallow, woodruff, wild rose, cornflower and others.
Each botanical is macerated for weeks and distilled on its own, and the single distillates are blended with the base spirit at the partner distillery Schilkin on the Gutshof Alt-Kaulsdorf in Berlin, where the Kornbrand is made under Dr. Mier. Every spirit is filtered seven times, made in small editions — 999 bottles for the vodka and Korn, 9,999 for the gin — and bottled, sealed and numbered by hand in Berlin; the pre-production is done with Berlin workshops for people with disabilities.

FAQ

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the history and founding story?

Vincent Honrodt's great-grandfather Ernst Honrodt was director of the Vossberg sugar factory near Berlin in the 1930s and distilled spirits from the region's grain and sugar beet for family and friends. Vincent Honrodt, a native Berliner, revived that family tradition in 2009 with Berliner Brandstifter, adding the Berlin Dry Gin in 2013 and the Berlin Aged Gin in 2018.

How are raw materials sourced?

The Kornbrand, which is also the gins' base spirit, uses only German wheat of the highest quality class, more than 14,000 grains a bottle; the vodka is distilled from French sugar beet; and many of the flowers and botanicals are grown and partly hand-picked around Berlin.

What unique production methods are used?

Each botanical is macerated for several weeks and distilled separately, so the aromas can be balanced against each other; the single distillates are then joined with the base spirit at the partner in Berlin-Kaulsdorf. Every spirit is filtered seven times, and each vodka edition rests several weeks in a 700-litre steel tank before bottling.

What collaborations or partnerships exist?

The Kornbrand is produced by the award-winning family firm Schilkin, which has made spirits on the Gutshof Alt-Kaulsdorf since the 1920s, under the direction of Dr. Mier, and Berliner Brandstifter works with Berlin workshops for people with disabilities in its pre-production.

What is the policy on limited releases?

Every edition is small and numbered by hand: 9,999 bottles for the Berlin Dry Gin and the Dark Dry Gin, 999 for the vodka and the Premium Kornbrand, and smaller limited runs for the Aged Gin and the 16-year Gelagerter Kornbrand.
