About this bottle
The product
The VDP.Grosse Lage Pechstein takes its name from the basalt that marks Forst: the Pechsteinkopf, once an active volcano above the village, scattered volcanic rock over the slope ages ago. Beside weathered red sandstone, sandy loam and fine clay, with veins of basalt below, loose basalt stones lie on the surface — brought in from a nearby quarry in the 19th century to improve the soil, as was the custom then. This exceptional site gives a dense, very intense Riesling.
Typical of Pechstein is the spicy, smoky flint note that rises almost mysteriously from the depths. The fruit dances on the nose: ethereal citrus zest, aromatic herbs and yellow apricot. On the palate very concentrated and juicy, with a fine saltiness; the precise acidity and grippy minerality carry it to great length. Vintage 2024, VDP.Großes Gewächs, Qualitätswein from the Pfalz, dry: 13 % vol, 1.9 g/l residual sugar and 7.4 g/l acidity. Contains sulphites.
