About the producer

Their story

Weingut von Winning in Deidesheim is one of the great estates of the Pfalz: founded in 1849, named after Leopold von Winning, a co-founder of today's VDP, and farming some 50 hectares from Neustadt-Haardt to Forst — Riesling above all, with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Grapes from the estate's own 50 hectares of vineyards between Neustadt-Haardt, Deidesheim and Forst, planted densely with up to 12,500 vines per hectare and farmed without herbicides, insecticides or mineral fertiliser.
Spontaneous fermentation in wooden casks of different sizes and long lees contact, with as little filtering and pumping as possible and no fining — a cooper's workshop belonged to the estate from the start, proof that its wines were always fermented in wood. Its barrels of Sauvignon Blanc I also finish STORK CLUB's Wine Barrel Series rye whiskey.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the history and founding story?

The estate's roots go back to 1718, when Pierre Jordan, a winegrower's son from Savoy, bought his first vines in Forst, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg. In 1849 Friedrich Deinhard founded the estate in Deidesheim from his wife Auguste Jordan's share of the Jordan inheritance. His grandson-in-law Leopold von Winning took it over in 1908; he co-founded the association of natural wine auctioneers that is today's VDP, and the estate's 1911 Trockenbeerenauslese fetched a record 20,000 gold marks. Since the 2008 vintage the estate carries his name again, under Stephan Attmann's direction since 2007.

How are raw materials sourced?

From the estate's own vineyards: some 50 hectares of the best sites from Neustadt-Haardt through Deidesheim to Forst, among them the Forster Pechstein, Ungeheuer, Jesuitengarten and Kirchenstück. Riesling makes up 59 percent of the vines, followed by Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Weissburgunder and Pinot Noir.

How does climate and terroir influence production?

The estate works without herbicides, insecticides or mineral fertiliser and plants densely, with up to 12,500 vines per hectare. In the cellar it uses filters and pumps as little as possible, does without fining, ferments spontaneously in wooden casks of different sizes and leaves the wines long on their natural lees.

How can visitors book tours or tastings?

Weingut von Winning offers wine tastings at the estate in Deidesheim, requested through its website; the current times are on the estate's own site.
