About the producer

Their story

A family grain distillery in Schöppingen in the Münsterland, distilling Korn since 1707. Rüdiger Sasse reopened it after a near-closure in 1985 and in 1987 created Lagerkorn, a Kornbrand aged in barriques from the Cognac region; today it makes aged Korn, a straight rye whisky, the Heide Gin with juniper from the Grafschaft Bentheim, fruit spirits and natural liqueurs.

A malt-and-grain combination from the region for the Lagerkorn and organic grain for the rye whisky, water from the distillery's own well, juniper berries hand-picked in the Grafschaft Bentheim, Tulameen raspberries from a Münsterland fruit farm, and organic elderflowers the whole team picks by hand two days a year; barriques of Limousin and Allier oak and American oak, bought in the Cognac region.
Sasse distils by hand in traditional stills and was, by its own account, the first distillery to age Korn for years in barriques — Lagerkorn is the first and only German Kornbrand aged long enough to carry the V.S.O.P. grade. Its casks rest in the Reifugium, a building on the Schöppinger Berg open to the wind, where they go through all four seasons and higher alcohols turn into esters. In 2025 the World Spirits Award named it a World Class Distillery, the only grain distillery in Germany among the 18 best distilleries worldwide.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the history and founding story?

Feinbrennerei Sasse was founded in 1707 and has distilled Korn in the Münsterland ever since. The spirits monopoly of 1918 and industrial alcohol brought a long decline, and in 1985 the distillery briefly closed, leaving the 16-year-old Rüdiger Sasse before the ruins of 300 years of family tradition. On St Nicholas' evening 1987 he found a bottle of Korn distilled by his great-grandfather Theo Sasse — layered and full of flavour — and the idea of Lagerkorn was born.

How are raw materials sourced?

The grain comes from the region, the rye whisky's in organic quality, and the water from the distillery's own well. Juniper berries for the Heide Gin and the Kräuterwacholder are hand-picked in the Grafschaft Bentheim, the raspberries are Tulameen from a Münsterland fruit farm, and the team harvests organic elderflowers itself two days a year.

What are the aging and warehousing facilities?

At the heart of the distillery is the Reifugium, whose architecture exposes the casks to the climate of the Schöppinger Berg, so the spirits go through all four seasons; spicy new aromas form and higher alcohols turn into esters. Sasse uses barriques of Limousin and Allier oak and American oak, chosen on site in the Cognac region, seasoned four years in the open and toasted medium or heavy.

What unique production methods are used?

Sasse distils by hand in traditional stills and takes time: the Lagerkorn V.S.O.P. ages at least four years in former cognac barriques, and up to 50 barriques of three age categories are tasted and married for it.

What visitor experiences or tours are available?

The farm shop in Schöppingen opens Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday 10 am to 5 pm with tastings and regional products. Personal distillery tours of about an hour, special tours with three tastings, a tasting flight and workshops such as creating your own alcohol-free spirit can be booked. Current prices and dates are on the producer's own website.

What awards and certifications have been received?

In 2025 the World Spirits Award named Feinbrennerei Sasse a World Class Distillery, the only grain distillery in Germany among the 18 best distilleries worldwide.
